When it comes to energy, every bit adds up. Maybe it is just a computer monitor brightening an otherwise dark room with a colorful screen saver. Or unnecessary appliances left plugged in. Or an open laboratory fume hood. Or a forgotten window left open just a crack.
It all adds up, and it all makes a difference.
UMD staff have installed systems to automatically turn down ventilation when buildings are in low-occupancy mode. We have swapped in more efficient lighting systems. We have increased building efficiencies through window and roof replacements. Now, we need campus users do their part.
Take a minute to check the following before you leave campus for the weekend or extended breaks, to save energy and help the environment:
- Turn off lights and office equipment
- Shut down your computer and printer
- If you have access to it, lower your thermostat
- Unplug all unnecessary appliances, including phone and other electronic device chargers
- Close and lock windows
- Ensure all fume hoods are closed
- Turn off research equipment off, where possible
